Play, learn and grow together

Electricity and circuits

We looked at the basic principles of electricity and circuits and worked in groups to figure out 2 different types of circuits that power lightbulbs from simple 1.5v batteries.

Bog in a bottle

In geography, we've been studying peatlands of Ireland and formation of blanket and raised bogs.
We worked together to make our very own bog in a bottle, mixing paper, chippings, peat, moss, heather and water!

Animal adaptation art

•             5th and 6th have been studying physical and behavioural adaptations in Animals

•             This is when living things change themselves in order to survive

•             Examples include the arctic hare having white fur or salmon migrating to lay eggs

•             Here is our art showing the animal adaptation of camouflage

Age of exploration history projects

·      5th and 6th have been studying the age of exploration and colonialism in History

·      We found out about the important technology and reasons behind European explorers travelling to America, Africa, India and beyond

·      Some discoveries were exciting and beneficial, although other things that happened were terrible moments in History

·      We hope you enjoy the projects we worked on in small groups – we think they explain a lot of what happened

Webwise - web safety for students and parents

Hi parents, please take a moment to have a look through this really useful website aimed at promoting web safety among schoolchildren.

There are some excellent resources and advice to browse through, please let me know if you have any questions.
Through the SPHE curriculum we will be using ideas from webwise in 5th and 6th throughout the year.

Thanks to Ms Roche and 4th/5th class for showing us their amazing inventions!

Collecting and showing Data

In maths we've been studying data collecting and showing data -  we answered questions like:
  • How many times have you been to the hospital?
  • How long does it take you to do your homeowrk?
  • What was the monthly rainfall in Kildare last year?
We showed them in bar charts and trend graphs.

Food Chains and Food Pyramids

We studied the importance of healthy diet and regular exercise in SPHE through our study of the food pyramid. We made our own.
We also looked at food chains in science and all about producers, consumers, predators and prey.

Hokusai paintings

In art we studied the work of Japanese artist, Hokusai. He made many prints of Mt Fuji, and his work became popular and influential in Europe.
Here are our versions of his print "The Great Wave of Kannagawa"

Making volcanoes

In geography we were studying formation of mountains and volcanoes, so we decided to carry out an experiment in Science which would make our own volcanoes.
We mixed bicarbonate soda (a basic/alkaline substance), and vinegar (an acidic substance) which creates carbon dioxide and energy.
The mixture bubbled out from our sand volcanoes!

Mondrian Animals

In science we studied food chains and animals, and in Art we looked at the work of Piet Mondrian.
He was a modernist painter who used bright colours; we used his work as an inspiration in our cartoon animals.
